1. Is there a limit to how many times one can bleach one' s teeth?
The process of bleaching can take from 3 to 14 days utilizing a tray system. In order to prevent relapse we suggest a boost (one hour) after a dental cleaning twice a year. Overbleaching can result in generalized tooth sensitivity. There is no data that confirms the number of times one can bleach in a lifetime.
2. Are tooth whitening products safe?
The products sold over the counter are traditionally used materials in lesser concentration than is provided in the dental office. I prefer the tray system or the strips that are barriers to reduce the amount of bleach material ingested as opposed to the paint on products that fail to provide that protection.
3. Are there any natural ways to whiten my teeth?
Hydrogen peroxide rinses may provide a minimal effect. Combining baking soda and hydrogen peroxide into a paste and applying it to the teeth will work, however it may create an uneven result.
4. What is laser teeth whitening all about?
There are options to bleach the teeth in one sitting which include laser, BriteSmile, and extremely potent tray systems. In my experience, clinical and personal, a tray system with multiple applications affords the best result allowing for less sensitivity, more even bleaching and the ability to fine tune the result. It has been shown that the bleaching lights are no more effective than the trays systems.
5. How white should I go when bleaching?
The goal is to match the whites of the eyes. More than that looks fake.
